In terms of design it's shite! But in terms of "build your own site" interfaces and abilities it's pretty damn good- you drag and drop elements onto the page.
The OP asked "Is there anything out there that's easier for a novice to update, and add new content to, than Wordpress?"
This answers that brief.
They didn't ask for something with awesome design, bespoke design and all the freedom that joomla, drupal etc would offer.
