  "Only 4 episodes in though"

  There's your problem. Having watched it all the way through, the series got better with each episode. I was a bit put off by the first few episodes too, but I imagine if I go through and watch them again now, having watched the later ones, many more jokes will reveal themselves. (There are a lot of incidental things that happen in those early episodes that end up being foundations for jokes later.)
