I used to watch The Silk Road back in the early 80s, haunting theme by Kitaro, awkwardly translated commentary from the native Chinese. Fascinating places through central asia, across the Taklamakan Desert to the dry inland sea of Lop Nor and onto Xian. Whole ancient cities in the desert, abandoned, artifacts just beneath the soil, thousands of years of trade, jade and silks headed for Rome and feudal lords back in Europe. It's on my bucket list.
