It checks every month and at that point, you need to be connected so it can check your subscription. Otherwise, it's exactly like how it was before. You still download the software (massive files) and install it. Essentially, they're trading a serial number for a subscription, whereas a serial number can be hacked / patched but a subscription is based on your Adobe ID and how many devices you have it paired with (right now it's 3 devices per subscription but you can only have one app open at a time across all devices).
I like it a lot, and it's cheap. The fact that you have access to all apps and it's easy to update is nice.
