FontFabric + Lost Type coming out with some fantastic free fonts lately:

-Limited styles/weights
-Sometimes poorly tracked/kerned letter pairs
-Limited application (ie: some better for screen, print, diff. sizes, etc.)But there is still a lot of great free fronts to be had. Just set your expectations realistically!
