^ I've gone to the Chicago marathon many times because it always goes through my neighborhood. Security is essentially to block traffic. I'm sure it's more around the start/finish area. After what happened in Boston it makes me think how absolutely easy it probably was for the person to do this. The crowd is paying attention to the runners, not people around them.
Can anyone confirm of there are security entrances near the finish in Boston? Did people have to even be checked? My assumption is no. I'm sure it's just a come as you please type of situation except for access to grand stands or VIP viewing area.
