they're really similar, so what I've read is lean towards you lens investment. e.g. if you have nikon lenses go with nikon.
I hear the canon has less noise when compared to the nikon e.g. nikons 800iso looks like canon's 400iso.
the big issue with both is that you'll need a wider lense than normal 35mm due to the 1.6 crop factor...e.g. 50mm becomes 80mm, so for 50mm you need a 31mm ish lens.
i have a 10d...love it
