I thought this was ridiculous, until my recent trip and saw what passes for drink sizes in the states. A "small" soda was almost the size of a large here in Australia. Same goes with coffee. And then there's the "gentle" encouragement to buy bigger. The Burger King at LAX (I didn't go to any other one, for obvious reasons) had drink prices set so that the difference between small, medium and large was only 10c increments.
