I did it last year, I lived with her for 3 years before we got engaged. Marriage kicks ass, I love being married. There is something to be said about always having someone to come home to. Plus my wife is my best friend. I knew her for 8 years before we started dating.
As for rings... I designed her's myself. I did a Sterling Silver band with 4 square diamonds in an invisible setting, to create a huge diamond look. The total for everything was less than 2 grand. It looks like it is worth about $6500 or more.
The best advice I can give you is get the ring insured, A friend of mine lost his ring the week before he was going to pop the question. He did not have insurance so he had to buy another one...
