You may want to look at devices that are NOT dependant on a computer.
I have a Leviton low voltage lighting, drapes, AC, stereo, etc etc system hooked up to a Creston control system. There is no computer involved per se and I like it that way.
If your on a budget look into PLC (Power Line Control) devices. They are cheaper and you can buy a remote control for many of the modules.
The best software based system is the HAL 9000 but I dont know if it is Mac compatible. Good luck.http://www.automatedliving.com
