That's the nature of the beast though isn't it? Changing at the last minute?
To be honest... there's definitely a reason why there is such a thing in design production as a process and schedule exists, but in general, I find there to be great value in creating a process flexible enough to allow for the emergence of a better idea... should one present itself.
Now, I'm not saying your boss is right to suggest the idea interface, but in general, if the idea is better, go with it. Regardless if a ton of production has already been completed. The end result will be better.
