I'm in Tucson, AZ.
I can't speak for Pheonix which is hotter and much larger. Lot's of economy going on there.
Here in Tucson, the scene is choked with artists and bands. A very talented group of people. It's hot as hell here in the summer. We stick together and love the desert with it's accessible 'bleak' landscape. I don't know where you are from but we've enjoyed 70 degree temperatures this week.
The economy is slow and small here but if you get in it, it's the best place to live anywhere.

People always complain about not finding jobs but I have found every job I've had here in the newspaper! (online)
I'd say, if you like nature, move here. You'll be inspired by the mountians, and alien landscape.
