I think it has a LOT to do with the editors and link quality - if both suck - you're screwed.
K10K, pixelsurgeon, NT, threeoh, linkdup (although badly needing some attention) are all great portals because of the quality of the design and editors.
Nothing to do with being famous or what clients you work for...helps to know people who are running in the right circles....
