in nz we banned hitting children. So many people said 'we can do what we want I can hit my kids if I want. it shouldn't be banned' They missed the point. Banning hitting kids was a way of the whole of the NZ public saying hitting kids isn't ok. People will still hit kids, of course, but now those that do know how we all feel about it. as a group don't condone it.
Banning certain weapons that are ridiculously destructive could be a similar gesture. It says to all that we all don't think it's ok to give one person the power to end the lives of many. If you still want to have a weapon, fine. but as a majority we all agree it's not such a great idea.
