the absolutionist point so many take on this idea is fucking stupid and is the real reason the country gets nowhere in this debate.

throughout the history of the world (but we'll concentrate on america), we've had to adjust course for the cause of the greater good.

would banning assault rifles, or even guns altogether, in america solve any problems completely? of course not. there are far more issues at stake in a complex combination of media, psychology, civil liberties and discourse.

but let's not forget the US constitution for a period of time used to count african americans / former slaves as three fifths of a person. was changing that, and allowing blacks the full right to vote and then, you know, other obvious human rights, going to solve the problem of racism in america? certainly not. it still hasn't. but we're getting there, slowly but surely.

the same way the 3/5ths compromise was three steps forward, two steps back in the idea of human rights and safety, so would realizing that the second amendment never considered ar-15s in the populace.

it's a large problem, but to ignore it and just say "we need our guns" will never solve anything (nor will simply adding more guns to the equation). the liberals who think eliminating the second amendment will suddenly make problems go away are just as dumb as those who think standing armed in a crowd is a safe public measure.

in the end, all we'll be left with tragedy if nobody's allowed to compromise.
