This "logic" that "well, shit, if they didn't have a gun they'd go build a missile" is pathetic.
Guns take about 3 seconds to become lethal. Bombs take premeditation, planning, at least a little skill, then they have to be detonated.
Further, there is little "power" in a bomb. Guns give you a first person control and experience, you actually "do" the deed, thereby releasing all that crazy rage/anger/hatred. Bombs, not so much.
Think of it like this, how many video games about sell where all you did was detonate bombs? Not many. Nope, people like to wield a lethal weapon that they fully control, hence the popularity of first person shooters.
The problem is many fold, not just guns, not just crazy people. Anyone that simply states it is not guns is just in a ridiculous denial. I don't want to hear about stupid "rights", "freedoms", etc., etc. I just want steps towards a solution, no more excuses.
