I guess I should clarify my original post. I am all for hiring an illustrator. There is no doubt custom illustration would relay intention, brand voice, everything better. But... there are times when you get a job thrown at you that needs to be out by the end of the day, or has no budget, or both and you won't have the luxury of getting quotes, going through revisions etc... In these cases a decent library of stock is better is a necessity.
I think matrakid's suggestion is right on it would help immensely when selling an idea.
