You gold bugs, austrian guys always think there is something magically about stores of wealth and ignore the role of violence in state coercion. Civilization has been about nomads vs. farmers since forever. Your perspective is narrow and your time horizon very, very short.
Paper money, and increasingly the electronic abstraction of paper money is the rule of the land now because the US, and Europe, wish it to be so because they control the tools of violence and coercion. If it suited them, it could be gold, or pebbles.
paper money is so 18th century really - we now have computers calculating the value of derivative stores of second order currency holdings and trading among themselves at light speeds based on algorithms no one really understands. The relation between that and whatever BS you say about 'paper currency' is sadly short of the whole picture and hundreds of years away from the actual territory.
As is our political structures. Stone age religions, 16th century statecraft, 20th century infrastructure and 21st century tech. We need to rethink things, not point to some magically "gold was used in rome and boy did they do great shit!" thinking.
