    utopian - great work is no good if no-one knows about it.

    bn666 - one thing that has worked well for me is to focus on a niche market. For example, because of the area I live in, we have a lot of manufacturing clients.

    Here's some ideas:

    1. Networking, Seminars (your own).

    So I put on a seminar every so often about how those types of companies can market themselves online. I usually get around 15 people turn up and most times get at least one new client from that.

    Also, I got the local Chamber of Commerce to put an event on. They got all the people in the room and I did a talk on how to market online.

    2. Build a list.

    I created a freebie book. It's a basic guide to SEO, but you can do this for whatever your field is. Then I encouraged people to sign up, get it for free and get monthly updates.

    This has been great. Some recent jobs have come from people I met over 3 years ago but have been getting my newsletter.

    3. Blog.

    I blog a lot and aim to create a load of useful info for my target market. It's amazing how many people read and follow the advice, then when they realise how hard it can be to implement ... they call.

    This is all about positioning.

    I know that sounds a bit much when you just want to get on with doing the creative work, but seriously, it's worth putting the time in to build your business.
