This is a bubbling up of the hard-right ecosystem causing indegestion for the Romney camp.... trying to look palatable when your co-conspirators are wingnuts can be hard....
I spent a few years growing up in the south, and I had neighbors with views like these hard-liners...... and it's part of a "world view".... some people even believe that birth control is a form of murder.... why? long story, but if they believe that any form of birth control or abortion that happens after conception is the same as murder, and they believe that murder is worse than rape, then the logic flows that any woman who has an abortion after being raped is a murderer herself and should be in jail....
There's also a sizeable bunch of republican primary voters who hold up a few litmus tests, i.e. never raise taxes, always outlaw abortion,etc... so if a republican wavers on either of these committments, they may have a fight from the right....
Anyone who wavers is called a RINO, or Republican In Name Only, but of course, they often nominate EIPO's, or candidates who are Electible In Primary Only, where they scare the shit out of moderate voters....
All this rape talk is all thinkable in the abstract, in concepts, conversations, etc... of course it changes completely when your sister or cousin is raped.... that's the essence of how easy it is to be so ideological is when you're not really living through it, like arguing with a first year law student... ugh!
