nah, don't do it...that just brings you down and you're too talented for that...if you contact him, just be honest. I think its ok (and probably good for you) to send him a "look at me now" email.
If it were me, I'd even mention that comment he made and thank him for it because it gave you fire to become a kick-ass designer.
People can read between the lines more than you realize.
