What fails me in this whole cycle of nonsensical argument is that there are no clearly defined boundaries about where this 'movement' begins or ends – which is what makes the antagonists as nebulous as the protagonists.

A buddy of mine said "yeah, when the whole hipster thing started...." and i questioned him about the definition of what that 'thing was'. He described a vague set of clothes (which we owned) and an even vaguer lifestyle (which we probably both lived) and then lost himself in a spiral of descriptions which emphasised my point above.

The fact that people use it to tag anything that is going on in youth culture that's depicted as cool is also unhelpful. It's like when people talk about a presentation of design & art direction as "the creative".

The main point I'm trying to make is that the term is so resolutely vague and pointless, it's folly to even recognise the discussion around it as an endeavour.

    • i think hipster is defined clearly by this: would you have been considered an extra in the movie pretty in pink?prophetone
