due to the way trademark law is structured you must be seen to be defending your trademark. this is even more important for companies using common words as a trademark. non defence in some countries can eventually lead to loss of a trademark.
Apple and other large companies therefore sue companies in various countries to uphold their trademarks and not necessarily because they want to kill other companies.
