One guy gets on a plane with a non-working underwear bomb and you all agree to have poorly paid government workers radiate you with x-rays at airports and look at your junk at their discretion. Another guy gets on a plane with a non-working shoe bomb and you all cower and say "Sure, mister man, I'll take off my shoes for you to look at."
30,000 people actually hurt or killed with guns a yeah and suddenly it's all "Woah, stop right there - you want me to give up mah godgiven rights to your intrusive authority for some sort of nanny state safety?"
