If gun laws were much, much, much stricter and had been in place for a long time already, this kind of thing probably wouldn't have happened. I like to imagine that making guns illegal would, over time, slowly reduce the number of guns out there. Expecting Americans to hand them over as soon as a law is in place is not realistic, but to discover them and confiscate them would be a good start moving forward.
