The above argument can also be used to support the 'armed society is a polite society' viewpoint, in that would-be perpetrators who are planning and logically thinking about such acts, without being killed, would be deterred if they thought someone might be packing. However, the cost of this viewpoint is that when someone doesn't care about their survival, you now have multiple shooters with various amounts (or lack) of training shooting in a densely populated dark space. In this situation, friendly fire will happen, which is no less tragic than some nut shooting you.
