    agentfour,

Your question is not surprising. I've always found it odd personally however. In my experience I've witnessed countless web hosting consumers "feel" better when they select a host local to them. This thinking is generally NOT based on the idea that network speeds will be faster due to proximity (because after all, the people viewing websites most often are dispersed internationally) but rather exactly as you put it... to "go round and bust heads if need be". Funny thing is though nearly 99.999% of web hosting consumers never physically visit their web host in person. I think in the end what counts is accessibility. Try to select a host that is prompt to answer calls, or returns calls when specifically asked. It's a tricky business trying to serve thousands and thousands of users by phone. At my company we sometimes fall short in this task but overall we are very much humanly accessible - which ultimately is what web hosting consumers need. People want to talk to people and get problems solved. I hope this helps.
