Blast from last year... big update on this ongoing saga I originally posted about. Just heard all this on the phone from my mom:
Her friend - a single/divorced mom in her late 50s with the 18 year old and 21 year old son living at home - woke up at 4:30 am last Saturday to people pounding on the door. There were 30 - 40 DEA agents and police surrounding their house, guns aimed at the house at all doors and windows. They had drug dogs too. One of the sons went downstairs and opened the door; the agents and cops burst in there, had the two sons on the ground, then her daughter (a totally normal young teenager) woke up, barely dressed, the mom came downstairs naked in a robe. Cops make them sit on the couch, and search the entire house with dogs.
They found 84 grams of pot total, some in one son's room (only one son is selling it now - the younger son - and the older son wised up and stopped all that) and some in the mom's closet, where the son had hidden it before. She'd known that he had done that before but wasn't aware he was doing it now.
They all got taken to the police station and from what it sounds like it was quite an ordeal. The mom wasn't arrested, but she was handcuffed, and had to pay $1,000 bail to get out. How do you have to pay bail if you're not arrested? She wasn't even read miranda rights.
The son that got busted only had to pay $500 to get out - his friends covered it. They all had full body searches, she was stripped down to bra and underwear and searched by a cop. They even f'ing checked when she went #2 to see if she had tried to get rid of hidden drugs or anything. She doesn't even do drugs, it's just her idiot sons.
So, she's the homeowner, and in the past knew this was going on. They're meeting with a lawyer next weekend, but I'm totally curious what's going to happen. She wasn't in possession, nor selling it, nor totally aware it was in the house at the time, but she knew the son had pot and smelled it in the house. I wonder what she's liable for? Accessory to the sale of drugs? Any ideas?
In Illinois, 30 - 500 g (first offense) is a felony with 1 - 3 years possible jail time and a $25,000 fine. They found 84 grams total.
Oh, and this all got tipped off by the parents of the son's friend, who found their son with pot and made him tell the cops where he got it.
That show of force - 30 - 40 cops and DEA agents, drug dogs, raiding the house at 4:30 am, that's a real fucking show of force! Is that normal for amounts that low, or could they have been expecting to find a lot more? She asked him if he had any more hidden in the house - he said no but who could believe him? It's hard to really know. She said there were cop car lights all over their street. She thought the sons were both straightening up and doing better, but, uh, no...- way easier to do drug busts all day long than fight real crime like murders, rapes and abuse.robotron3k
