HFJ and other long-established foundries remain the legit-est. I have nothing but respect for the time-tested, reliable typefaces of the print design era.
However, there are some great fonts in the Google web library that are free to use and embed for us new-wave digital designers. They might be rough around the edges but they look super nice in digital contexts, which is their intended usage.
Some good free Google fonts:
Oswald: http://www.google.com/webfonts/s…
(I used it for my name on my own site: http://www.jacoboneal.com)
Lato: http://www.google.com/webfonts/s…
(I used it almost exclusively on this site: http://www.bridgetownvocal.com/)
Open Sans: http://www.google.com/webfonts/s…
Alegreya: http://www.google.com/webfonts/s…
If you want the full list of fonts I've downloaded from Google, I can provide it. It was pretty boring to sift through all of the fonts looking for the best. I could probably provide a ZIP of all of the ones I downloaded, if anyone's interested.
