meetups can be good... and go to at a meeting or two before you directly approach people to work on a gig, as it takes time to get familiar, know the people,and not look like a headhunter.
....and not to be too cranky, but I think you should think of developers as "fellow creatives" not as a separate species....
Developers are often a bit touchy about designers who think we are just "people who take the designers brilliant screenshots and make everything just work"
