Those who complain about the melodrama need to remember that if the show only catered to the few die-hard fans and followed a more linear/exact adaptation, it would have been cancelled by now. The business of TV means altering it to appeal to a wide enough audience to make it viable. For better or worse, I'd rather have it as it is, than nothing at all.
