the 3D printers are pretty pricey to own. We've been looking into purchasing one and the typical range is 3-5k, maintenance and materials not withstanding.
The good thing about sourcing them is that they usually go through a 3D/CAD person who will look at your files (much like a pre-press department) and let you know what needs to be fixed or if they can do it and whatnot. Unfortunately, they usually charge you for that service.
