^ I was going to post on the comments but I really hate discussing things over there.
I agree with you that there are some issues Ron Paul supports that fall on the wrong side of the fence for a lot of us, including me. But there's some things that make him refreshing to a lot of people too.
- Closing bases, what other nominee is pro on this issue? It makes a lot of sense economically and for the sake of our safety if we're not physically present in basically every other country.
- Very little tie to corporations, again what other nominee can say this? Just look at his campaign funding, of all the active gop candidates he's got the highest % of donations from small individuals: http://www.opensecrets.org/pres1…
- As much as I've seen the guy operates on principle and not on power or ego.
- He'd fight to repeal the Patriot Act and the new NDAA Act. Who else would do that? Restoring our civil liberties is and should be a major topic right now.
So, I don't really think he's as fringe as you do. The racist newsletters do bother me but that was a very long time ago. I know this is mostly campaign reaction to the newsletters but:
As far as not getting the same sort of coverage other campaigns are getting I don't think it's a stretch to make that claim. Although to be fair I don't really watch tv news and really only go to CNN.com to see what's happening so to be honest you might be right (I just saw this: http://abcnews.go.com/blogs/poli…). He's also not for a ban on gay marriage but the way he describes it he's pro-gay marriage only so far as to say that the government shouldn't be involved in those sorts of decisions (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v...
And to counter something you said, most of the American Electorate hasn't a clue how what the Federal Reserve does.. or that they operate secretly without the scrutiny of congressional audits which is something that Ron Paul tried to get passed a few years ago. If they did know, maybe they wouldn't be for eliminating, but they'd undoubtedly be for tighter control.
- I'm waiting to see how this all pans out, if he goes 3rd party, I might throw my vote at him. I doubt he'll win R nod.********
