What UKV said. To the single word.
I'm a novice myself. But to add a slight bit to what he/she perfectly said: you can "find your brand" by plowing through the hundreds of brands out there, and it's easy to go ahead and do so, but to really appreciate the differences between them it has helped me (at least) starting by the noname brands: the bigger makers have their taste-marks that makes the basics harder to distinguish.
And unlike, say, a bottle of scotch it's much cheaper to go through a bundle. Sizes, builds, so forth...
