Rather then brands, I would suggest you sample different styles of cigars. Start with the wrapper, lighter shades / leaf (like a connecticut) tend to be a bit more mellow, easygoing... and a darker shade wrapper / leaf (like a robusto) have more complexity and "thump". Once you find a style you like, experiment with different brands in that style.
Also, like good whiskey or scotch distiller, try a boutique cigar if you come across them (hard to find, very low production numbers, but some of my favs have been stumbled upon thusly).
