isn't controversial. Is ugly. And dated.
"To all the
offended Americans in here: the rest of the world doesn't actually
care about "the 9/11 tragedy" anymore. And no, that's not
because us non-Americans "hate/envy you for your freedom".
We sympathized with you right after it happened. We honestly did. The international community - which is notoriously reluctant to approve of military intervention - even supported you when you decided to hunt down Osama & co. in Afghanistan.
But you kept milking 9/11 for sympathy points, and you kept using it along with the spectre of terrorism in order to guilt-trip the rest of the world in joining your "war on terror". And that war was getting ever more dubious goals and methods. The use of torture on suspected terrorists was bad enough, but then you had to extend this war by invading Iraq as well.
So, because of all that, don't be surprised if people get tired of this whole "OMG 9/11!" hysteria. Don't be surprised if it grates non-Americans when Americans keep banging on about something that happened a decade ago.
And really, don't be surprised when people flat-out disagree whenever somebody pulls that tired old "you have no right to disrespect the victims of 9/11"-routine.
After everything that's happened afterwards, America has long since lost its right to any sympathy over this issue. And really, it's not as if America actually cares about tragedies that happen outside its borders - if 9/11 would have happened in Zambia or Uganda, or even a country like Russia or the Netherlands, you'd be hard-pressed to find an American who even remembered it a decade later.
So, we - the non-Americans of the world - would really appreciate it if you'd put 9/11 into perspective already. You're entitled to commemorating your national disasters, but don't expect the rest of the world to share your pain. You don't share *their* pain either."
