As a personal anecdote: I've been working with a small industrial design firm for the last 4 months. We've been trying to tackle projects by applying a multi-disciplinary approach to product design that utilizes graphic design, product and industrial design to create a more holistic experience for products / things. More on the level of user-experience design than traditional product design, or design styling, as i've heard myriad engineers refer it to.

Anyway, my take on the subject is that while it is mighty cool to see ideas and stuff transmuted into the real world via means of modern-day manufacturing, the reality is not a lot different than dealing with clients who have a similar 'I want the logo bigger mentality'.

Per your 'enthusiast' comment i've found that the community around Product/Industrial design is really focused around IDSA. While incomparably ugly in an aesthetic sense to the AIGA, on a community level they're very much on the same level. You might try there for a start.
