The client really liked the composition and concept (elements implying a face) behind a really sharp Sadi Yann illustration, but needed a completely different story told (social media mashup), as well as wanted a different illustrative approach.
The assignment proved to be an interesting challenge of sequestering (yet balancing) inspiration, story, and execution...harnessing just enough overlap while trying to respect boundaries.
And if nothing else, it gave me an excuse to put knobby kneecaps on birds, so I can cross that off my illustration bucket list.
