    you should also export a null object (name it Null_something to work) and use it as a positioner for your 3d layer on after effects.

    also, the z-depth on after effects won't work with your rendered 3d object, so you'll have to work on your layers as it goes behind of your rendered object.

    one way to do this is just put the rendered layer in front of your 3d text layer, yea, you got to do it by hand...

    the other way is to make a rectangle on maya and render a mate object, so you can use it as a mask for your 3d text layer...
