When I was younger I did 4 or 5 logos on 99Designs. I literally just threw some stuff together in about ten minutes and I got paid for 4 of them.
It's pathetic how much they pay, and the fact that you're highly unlikely to win makes it even less appealing - The best design does not always win over a client.
I think 4 logos netted me maybe $400, and I was lucky.
The places are filled with plagiarising ideas from each other outright, and lots of people using vector stock sets - The businesses that use 99Designs e.t.c usually lap this up too.
I guy I used to work with in a hotel started doing 99Designs competitions when he wanted to learn Photoshop. He made the tutorials he was following (web 2.0 glossy logos e.t.c) profitable by simply following a Photoshop tutorial with the business' name as the subject. It's a neat way to learn the basics of Photoshop/Illustrator and make a few quid.
Other than that it's pretty degrading, frustrating and, if you try to create an actual brand rather than a solitary pretty picture, less-than-minimum-wage job.
