i have a 98 cherokee and love it.. never had a problem and the thing is tough as nails.
my sis has a 96 grand cherokee. Been through 2 transmissions, 1 motor, and some ball joints, along with many many electrical annoyances (doors not unlocking, lights randomly coming on, etc...)
what i've learned from this?
if you're getting a jeep, get something simple and proven.
