I'm not sure what you're asking about the calendar....
iCloud is pretty much set up as a caldav account just like gmail. Gmail calendars will sync normally even if you turn off the iCloud caldav account. it's like having multiple email accounts in mail.
you can rename those iCloud calendars in ical as well.
I got rid of my google calendar and transferred over to iCal specifically because the biggest advantage is the ability to now sync reminders...
