    Is the publication at all hitting a market that may actually buy your services in the future? Are they well enough designed that the tearsheet will look good on your website?

    Some well-paying gigs have given me unusable-in-portfolio tearsheets because of the way the designer covered my image with type and logos....

    Talk to the magazine staff, see if they're friends with other magazine people, if so, getting invited to a few parties may get you more business contacts...and try to learn about their advertisers, getting a gig shooting an ad or two in their publication may be worth more too....

    many small magazines think $150 is a lot of money.... just make sure something is exchanged, ad space or $$, not "for free"

    And make sure you keep copyright... they have limited publication rights, not all rights,etc.... if they want to use the image in a flyer, poster or subscription form, that's extra.... (or extra adspace for you)
