What subjects are you shooting?
I have used the 85mm 1.8 and its pretty great for portraits. I already have a 70-200 so I have ended up buying the Canon 28mm f1.8.
Its a really versatile little lens, bokeh is very nice. Only downside has been its not quite as sharp as other primes I own and its prone to flare. Having said that the shots I get off it have a wonderful film like quality and AF accuracy is spot on every time.
All the shots bar the last one on page two of my flickr are shot with the Canon 28mm f1.8.

- You can do long exposures at night with any lens.. Short exposures at night is a different story though..slappy

- Well it wont be that wide on your 40D and I would go for faster primes where possible..slappy
