It's an acronym, but there are plenty of acronyms out there with different pronunciations. JPG, GIF, etc. It annoys me when someone doesn't say each letter for specific acronyms, but saying each letter individually doesn't happen as often as making up an "easier" way of saying it (ie. NATO and nay-toe, or NASA).
Basically how people choose to pronounce an acronym varies, and depends on how easy it is to say it phonetically.
