on a general point.. greenpoint is roughly 20 blocks away from the nearest subway L train.. there is lots of busses you can take if you dont mind the long walk.. the L train is the only train in williamsburg that goes to manhattan.. greenpoint is also majority a Polish neighborhood.. with mostly railroad style apts in houses over apt buildings, which are being developed everywhere in BK just GP is still a 2 story walk up environment.. there is lots of parks, bike paths, bars, supermarkets, people in greenpoint/ williamsburg.. also there is people outside always 24 hours, but blocks can be also desolate and very empty depending on the area.. rent is also good in greenpoint compared to williamsburg where rent is double if not triple in some buildings.. go thru a real estate broker to get an apt..

those 2 areas are closest to union square.. bushwick is more inland.. and still even though the people are changing, it still has a lot of crime.. but you can get a huge brand new apt, for cheap, but there is the crime.. also bushwick is deep past williamsburg and lots of buildings are listed as being in williamsburg when they are not..

park slope is a great area.. dumbo is very small but arty.. cobble hill is great.. there is lots of choice for bk, but for closeness of lower manhattan. WB or GP wins all, especially for entertainment, nightlife, fun and location..

every neighborhood has crime.. just be aware of your surroundings.. keep your wallet in your front pockets.. and you will be fine..
