It's rare to find places that are actually seeking a "Designer" these days. Most want someone who offers design as part of the bundled package. When I see job postings for "designers" it's usually followed by a list of technologies: xhtml/css/javascript/AE/3-D/Flas... The core skills of a "Designer" no longer have value.
"design" has come to mean what programs you know and not how you think. The multiple skills a designer used to have to possess have been divided up into UX/UI/Interactive/etc. Am I an expert in UX? No, but I do understand how to structure complex information so that people can easily understand it. Would that get my resume a second look these days? Not a chance.
Businesses want software operators.
Clients want software operators to execute their visions.
