    Viking you're very typical of the Tea Party ignorance that is out there.

    Sure, the government needs to cut spending - everyone agrees on that. But why is it in any way a good idea to hold the economy hostage over the debt ceiling deadline? Like the article above says, the two things are not dependent on each other. Even the Paul Ryan plan that the Tea Party voted for months ago REQUIRED raising the debt ceiling a bunch of times even while it cut spending.

    So it's idiotic to stand in the way of raising it. If the U.S. credit rating gets downgraded or we default on our debt, it's going to be a massive cost to everyone and the economy could go to third world status more or less permanently.

    It's very telling that a month ago people on the right were actually arguing that failing to raise the debt ceiling would have zero consequences. Funny how you don't hear that argument anymore.
