As a general rule, I don't chime in on online gun conversations, because people are generally impassioned one way or the other on the topic, mostly in the "how could you dare!?" camp.

My perspective is set soundly upon region/culture. Where I have lived for my entire life, guns are viewed through a much less provocative lens. Around here, you are expected to know how to accurately and safely operate a firearm. In the same sense that you are pretty much expected to know how to repair a small engine, or administer basic first aid, or catch and clean a fish, or 100 other simple, day-to-day tasks. I'm not saying it is better or worse than other places in the world, I'm just saying that it is that way.

It seems to me that there are plenty of attitudes in other places that are considered the norm, but that I would consider to be unsafe. I just chalk it up to part of the flavor of the world we live in.

Understand that incidences of gun violence are not prevalent where I live. We're not immune, by any stretch; but you'll hear of a handful of shootings a year, at best. I also have been personally touched by gun violence, so please don't assume I take the subject lightly.

I respect the opinion of those against firearms. It's not difficult for me to see where the arguments are coming from. It's just that the subject always seems one-sided and I wanted to chime in with a bit of perspective. If you read this and all you can get is "go guns! boom-kill-awesome!" then there's really nothing more I can say.

    • good god is it difficult to argue with anything you said here... i really want to.. but i just can't.bogue
