Take the high (no pun intended) road. Write a civil note explaining the legality of your medication, maybe ask them what their main concern is, if it's beyond plain annoyance, and tell them you'll do your best to be considerate of them (maybe smoking on the opposite side of the house from them), if they work to be understanding of your position.
They feel like they have a say in what you do in your pad because it's not being contained to your pad. Just like if they were playing music too loud and it bothered you, you might go ask them to turn it down.
If the guy doesn't react in a level-headed and amicable way to that tact, you know there's no pleasing them (there's probably no pleasing the chick from the sound of it anyway), and you can go about your business knowing that you extended a measure of good will and willingness to compromise.
And if he does act favorably, then you've befriended (at least in a small measure) someone that you essentially share living space with, which is never a bad thing.
